Doing More Harm than Good: Clean Your Floor, Don’t Destroy It!
Most people don’t think too much about the floor they walk on until it’s damaged or dirty. But if you have beautiful pre-finished hardwood flooring in your home, sometimes the worst thing you can do is clean them – because many of the common household cleaners you have at your disposal will damage and even ruin your floors! Here’s a short list of common cleaners not to use when cleaning your hardwoods:
- Steam cleaning your hardwood floors with steam cleaners can damage them beyond repair, and will void most warranties even on new flooring
- Anything ammonia-based (this includes most common glass cleaners)
- Anything abrasive
- Anything acidic (that includes vinegar, no matter what web sites might tell you)
- Vacuums with beater bars
Although hardwood flooring can last decades if properly cared for, it’s delicate in a way. The wrong cleaning materials can age and damage your floor. Always use a hardwood-specific cleaner and a vacuum without the beater bar engaged in order to get the most out of your flooring investment!
